NAVA 54: Cyberspace
June 13, 2020

Because of the limitations on travel imposed by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, NAVA's 2020 meeting took place in the WebEx-based 1,000-seat "virtual meeting room" of the U.S. Library of Congress. (This meeting was originally planned for St. Augustine, Florida, but was postponed to 2022 and became NAVA 56).

More Details and additional photos of NAVA 54:

NAVA 54 Organizing Committee: Peter Ansoff, Amber Atteberry, Elizabeth Brown, Stan Contrades, and Ted Kaye.

Please Note: All photos on this page were screen shots taken while the historic eight-hour-long NAVA 54 meeting was taking place online.

The NAVA 54 Flag:

In a flag-design contest that ran for less than four weeks, 44 vexillographers submitted 101 designs for the NAVA 54 flag before the deadline.  In under three days, the five-member selection committee chose the winner, created by Matthew Thomas of the U.K.  He explained its symbolism: “This flag features a rotated ‘V’ for Vexillology, stylized as the ‘Share’ icon used across social media.  This symbol and the WiFi bars represent the Internet’s growing importance for vexillology and its ability to unite flag lovers everywhere, as in NAVA 54.  The flag features the colors of the flag of NAVA.”

Flag Design Judging Committee: Thomas Berryhill, Zach Harden, Carlos Alberto Morales Ramirez, Maikel Arista Salado, and Winn Wasson.

The virtual program included familiar NAVA meeting components such as the opening ceremony, scholarly presentations, the business meeting, virtual tours, Vexi-Bits, the Driver Award, and a closing ceremony, along with some breaks.  FIAV's president, Željko Heimer, shared special greetings.  The platform allowed member interaction—such as the question-and-answer period following each presentation.

During NAVA 54, librarian and NAVA member Elizabeth Brown gave a virtual guided tour of the Library of Congress’s digital resources.

The research library officially serves the U.S. Congress and is the de facto national library and the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States.  It is the world’s largest library, and complements its 18th-century origins with 21st-century technology.

Rachel Phelan gave a virtual tour of her studio.  She holds a primary degree from Trinity College, Dublin, and graduated from the Textile Conservation Centre.  She works for a wide range of institutions and private clients from her Dublin studio.  Rachel is a board member of The Institute of Conservator-Restorers in Ireland (ICRI) and flags, banners, and ceremonial textiles are an area of special interest for her.  She won the Whitney Smith award for her presentation at ICV 27 in 2017 and the Driver Award for her presentation at NAVA 52 in 2018.

Ted Kaye moderated a live interview of with special guest Roman Mars.
