NAVA 42: Austin, Texas
Texas State Capitol
October 10–12, 2008
Additional details and photos of NAVA 42: The NAVA 42 Flag:  The organizing committee selected a historical design originally drawn in 1839 by Peter Krag.  The NAVA 42 flag is a rectangular variant of the Texas revenue service flag, a square naval auxiliary flag authorized by the 1839 act that established the Lone Star Flag as the national flag of the Republic of Texas.  Krag drew the official art for both the Lone Star Flag and the auxiliary naval flags.  The design is especially appropriate as NAVA 42 celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Lone Star Flag’s re-adoption in 1933.

Meeting flag description from Flag Research Quarterly 11: The Flags of NAVA

Organizing Committee: Hugh L. Brady, James T. Liston, Harry W. Oswald, Charles A. Spain, and H. P. (Pete) Van de Putte, Jr.

Significant Events:

  • This was the first time the full FIAV Board attended a NAVA annual meeting outside of an International Congress of Vexillology.
  • The governor of Texas recognized Whitney Smith as an Honorary Texan and Michel Lupant as an Honored Friend.
  • At this annual meeting the practice began of acknowledging in the annual meeting program the flag manufacturers and the specific types of annual meeting flags they manufactured.

The Featured Tours:

On Friday evening Hugh Brady took the group on a guided tour of the Texas State Capitol Building highlighting the history, art, and politics of the building which included the original San Jacinto Battle Flag in the Senate chamber.  The attendees visited the Center for American History at the University of Texas on Saturday, viewing a dozen outstanding flags pulled from its extensive collections by staffers Lynn Bell and Helen Graves, and helping to resolve mysteries in their provenance or identification.  Another stop on the tour took in the Austin History Center to see the original 1919 Austin City Flag on display.
