October 12–14, 2007
Details and additional photos of NAVA 41 The NAVA 41 Flag: In the design by Dean Thomas of Downey, California, the three grape vines come from the state arms of Connecticut, and the blue and white colors recall the Connecticut state flag.  The “V” motif symbolizes vexillology.

Meeting flag description from Flag Research Quarterly 11: The Flags of NAVA

Organizing Committee: Peter Ansoff, Dev Cannon, and Ted Kaye

Significant Events:

  • Dr. Susan P. Schoelwer, the Connecticut Historical Society’s chief curator, spoke at the Saturday night dinner on the 1864 Treasury Guards regimental flag (U.S. colors) which decorated the presidential box at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., on the night of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.  Donated to the society in 1922, the flag lay undisturbed and little-noticed for nearly seven decades.
  • The NAVA 41 flag was flown outside the hotel at half staff with the other displayed flags honoring a recently fallen Connecticut soldier.

The Featured Tour:

On Saturday the participants visited the Connecticut State Capitol’s Hall of Flags and the Connecticut Historical Society’s extensive collection.  At the Capitol, curator Gerry Caughman guided the NAVA visitors through the state’s outstanding collection of 171 Civil War battle flags.  At the Society, staff pulled out several dozen special flags and flag-related items from its holdings and conducted a “behind-the-scenes tour” with NAVA members providing expert consultation to museum staff on many of the items.
