NAVA 38 Flag Photo

NAVA 38: Indianapolis, Indiana
Radisson Hotel City Centre
October 8–10, 2004
Details and additional photos of NAVA 38: The NAVA 38 Flag:  James A. Croft of Northampton, Massachusetts, designed the flag, which shows the NAVA chevron on a background of black and white checks, representing the checkered flag used in auto racing, representing the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Within the chevron, a black-and-white version of the Indianapolis flag appears.

Meeting flag description from Flag Research Quarterly 11: The Flags of NAVA

Organizing Committee: Truman G. Pope and members of the Great Waters Association of Vexillology (GWAV)

Significant Events:

  • NAVA officially announced the results of its American City Flag Survey (fortunately, the Indianapolis flag ranked in the top ten city flags in the country!).
  • At the Saturday night's banquet Donna Schmink, a museum specialist with the Indiana War Museum, gave a compelling illustrated keynote talk about the Civil War battle flags in its collection.

The Featured Tours:

The attendees visited the imposing Indiana War Museum.  After a tour of the entire museum led by curator Donna Schmink, which included a U.S. national flag carried at the Battle of Gettysburg with (purportedly) over 300 bullet holes in it, NAVA members were then taken “into the vaults” to see the huge collection of Civil War flags stored in massive archival shelving units.

The Presentations:

  • The “Pine Tree” Flag in the American Revolution — Peter A. Ansoff, Virginia.
  • The Genesis of the Stars and Bars — Devereaux D. Cannon, Jr. J.D., Tennessee.
  • Betsy Ross—An American Patriot and Legend Revisited — John B. Harker M.A., Florida.
  • The Hawaiian Flag — Patrick Ka’ano’i, Hawaii.
  • American City Flags—The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly — Edward B. Kaye, Oregon.
  • Star Patterns — David B. Martucci, Maine.
  • Changing Perspectives on Vexillology — Whitney Smith Ph.D., LF, FF, WSF, Massachusetts.
  • The Eagles of Buenos Aires — Gustavo Tracchia, New York, and Francisco Gregoric, Argentina.
  • Flags of Meso-America — Rafael Yates Sosa M.D., Mexico.

Announced Awards and Honors:

  • Captain William Driver Award: Devereaux D. Cannon, Jr. J.D.
  • The Vexillonnaire Award: Tony Johnson of Washington State for his design of the Chinook tribal flag.

Fiscal Sponsors:

Driver Award : CRW Flags, The Flag Guys, TME Co.
