Blackstone Hotel
October 10–12, 1997
Details and additional photos of NAVA 31: The NAVA 31 Flag:  The design, by John M. Purcell, is based on the Chicago city flag.  On a white field two sky blue stripes form a “V” for vexillology.  The four red six-pointed stars are arranged 3 and 1 to signify the 31st NAVA meeting.

Significant Events:

  • On the first day participants paraded from the Blackstone Hotel with flags flying to nearby Grant Park, where ceremonial presentations of the U.S., Canada, Illinois, Chicago, NAVA, and the NAVA 31 meeting flags were conducted, with brief explanations of the history of each flag.
  • Attendees were treated to two noted vexillologists as banquet speakers: Kevin Harrington, who entertained listeners with wry and amusing excerpts in "Who Said What About Flags: An Introduction to a Collection of Flag Quotations", and Dr. Whitney Smith, on a more serious note, who speculated about coming years in "Looking Towards the Future of Vexillology".
  • The members voted to rename the following executive board officers: the vice president became the first vice president; the corresponding secretary became the second vice president, and the recording secretary became the secretary.

The Featured Tours:

Participants toured the Advertising Flag Company's flag factory, where they viewed an impressive display of Illinois city flags mounted by Rich Kenny from his extensive collection.  Randy Smith, one of the flag company owners, then led the group on a tour showing the various techniques employed in the design and manufacture of flags.
