Who can join?
Any individual or organization interested in vexillology and agreeing to subscribe to the Association’s Bylaws is eligible for membership in the Association.
There are three types of paid membership:
- Active membership is open to any individual eighteen years of age or older. Active members may attend meetings, vote on matters submitted to the membership, hold appointed offices, and serve on most committees and receive all publications (Raven: A Journal of Vexillology; Flag Research Quarterly; NAVA News; and Semaphore e-bulletin) without additional cost. Active members residing in Canada and the United States may hold elected office and serve on the nominating committee. Active members are eligible for one free non-commercial exhibit table at the annual meeting. Dues are US$40 annually. For full-time undergraduate and graduate students, including those who have finished course work and are working on qualifying or comprehensive examinations, theses, or dissertations, dues are just US$20 annually.
- Associate membership is open only to spouses of active members and individuals under the age of eighteen. Associate members have all the privileges of active members except voting and holding elective office. Dues are US$20 annually.
- Organizational membership is open to any non-profit or for-profit organization. Organizational members have all the privileges of active members except holding office. They receive preferred rates on advertising and exhibit space at the annual meeting, and a listing on NAVA.org. An organizational member may designate an individual to represent the organization in the Association. Dues are US$60 annually.
Any school, library, or other institution may subscribe to the Association’s publications for US$40 annually.
How to Join the Association
The easiest way to join is via the online membership payment system through Philosophy Documentation Center (PDC), a non-profit company dedicated to helping non-profit academic-oriented organizations with their membership and access/distribution of their scholarly journals.
You may join by mail, but using the online system is quicker. If you still want to join by mail, print out the membership application, fill in the requested information, and mail it with your dues to the address below (which is also on the form). All payments must be either by: (1) check drawn on Canadian or US funds; (2) money order; or (3) international postal money order payable in US dollars. Do not send cash payments. Please make all checks or money orders payable to “Philosophy Documentation Center” and write “NAVA” on the memo line. Please mail your completed application with the first year’s dues to:
PHILOSOPHY DOCUMENTATION CENTER
PO BOX 7147
CHARLOTTESVILLE VA 22906-7147 USA
Your membership will be processed after your first year’s dues are received. This normally takes 3 to 4 weeks. You will receive all publications for the calendar year in which you pay dues, regardless of the date your membership was processed. Click here to contact the Association and select “Membership” in the category menu.
Notes About Membership Applications
Dues are payable on an annual basis (1 January to 31 December) and are not prorated. Multi-year dues payments are not accepted. If you join after the October annual meeting, your dues are paid through 31 December of the next calendar year.
The Association is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, and membership dues and other donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed under United States law and article XXI of the 1980 United States-Canada Income Tax Convention, as amended.
